Philadelphia Dentist describes appropriate treatment for sore gums
Poor oral health can lead to a myriad of dental problems, including the possible development of gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease can have a dramatic, negative impact on the smile and can result in the loss of bone, gum tissue, and natural teeth. In order to maintain the smile for a lifetime, patients are encouraged to maintain proper oral health habits to keep bacteria, plaque, and tartar from forming on the smile and causing unwanted problems. Without proper upkeep, patients may begin to experience problems such as persistent bad breath, bleeding while brushing and flossing, and sore gums.
For proper treatment, patients must first have an initial consultation appointment and examination with our team. At this time, we may take a series of impressions and x-rays along with an evaluation of the smile. We will check for pocket depth and signs of infection. With a proper diagnosis, we can then discuss appropriate treatment.
Treatment for periodontal disease will vary depending upon the stage it is in. Periodontal disease starts out as gingivitis. This is the point where the gums may bleed and begin to feel sore. At this point, early intervention is important to stop the disease and bring the smile back to health. A professional cleaning will often be the best way to address gingivitis, as well as antibiotic treatment if necessary. The later stages of periodontal disease may require a procedure called scaling and root planing which cleans all surfaces of the teeth above and below the gums. This is more invasive but is the necessary means of improving the smile’s health after the disease has progressed.
