Dental Implants Success Rate

Generally, dental implants have recorded a success rate of over 98 percent. In some cases, the percentage may vary depending on where the implants are placed in the jaw. However, the results of dental implants are predictable and long lasting compared to other options for tooth restoration. Remember to choose a good implant dentist for determining your candidacy for the procedure and receiving a reliable tooth replacement solution.

Who can get Dental Implants?

Anyone healthy enough to withstand an oral surgery or a routine dental extraction can get a dental implant. The patient should have healthy gums and bone. Also, the patient must practice good oral hygiene and regularly visit the dentist.

Patients who are heavy smokers, suffer from uncontrolled chronic disorders like heart disease or diabetes, or had radiation therapy for the neck/head area require special consideration. If you want a dental implant, consult with your dentist to check your candidacy.

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants involve replacement of the tooth roots.

The dental implant process starts with the development of an individual treatment plan to addresses your specific dental needs. A team of dental professionals experienced and trained in restorative dentistry and oral surgery prepare the individualized treatment plan. The team suggests best implant options and provides coordinated care accordingly.

Next, the implant (a small post of titanium), is placed within the missing tooth bone socket. Over time, the jawbone heals and grows around the metal post and anchors it securely within the jaw. The jawbone may take 6 to 12 weeks in healing.

Once the jawbone has bonded with the implant, a small connector post (an abutment) is attached to the metal post for securely holding the new tooth. After that, your dentist takes impressions of your teeth to create a model of your bite for making the new tooth or teeth. The model captures the arrangement and shape of your teeth.

The new tooth or teeth are created on the basis of this model. Later, a replacement tooth (a crown) is attached to the abutment. Some patients may have implants to support a removable denture.

Your dentist will match the color of your new teeth to the natural teeth. The replacement teeth appear, feel, and function similar to natural teeth with the implant secured within the jawbone. Many patients will quickly forget that they are using implants, and will use them just like the other healthy teeth.
