Philadelphia, PA dentist describes the process of obtaining dental bridges and crowns
Dr. David Spilkia is a dentist in Philadelphia, PA who helps patients understand the process of obtaining a beautifully restored smile. For many of our patients, this includes the use of dental crowns and bridges. Dental crowns and bridges are commonly used in our practice for individuals who need to repair their smile or replace missing teeth.
What is a dental crown?
The dental crown is a ceramic “cap” that is custom-made for a patient and is cemented over a natural tooth to provide strength and protection. This restoration may also be used over an abutment of a dental implant to act as a tooth replacement. Dental crowns are fabricated specifically for the patient to match the size, shape, and color of their existing teeth for seamless integration into the smile. At David Spilkia Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, our providers use high quality materials such as ceramic, which closely mimics the appearance of the natural teeth. We encourage patients to ask about dental crowns when natural teeth have been damaged or lost.
What is a dental bridge?
At David Spilkia Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer several different types of restorations for replacing missing teeth. However, one of the most popular is that of the dental bridge. A bridge is a restoration made of ceramic, just like the dental crown, and fabricated to match existing teeth. It includes a crown on each side and a pontic (one or more) in the middle. These are fused together to create a single restoration. The crowns are bonded over the adjacent teeth and the pontic slides in place. A dental bridge is perfect for patients who are missing one or more teeth in a row within the dental arch and have teeth on each side to support the restoration. Dental bridges have many benefits. They are:
- Permanent
- Affordable
- Natural-looking
- Strong and durable

What is the process of obtaining dental restorations?
First, a dentist must evaluate the smile to determine if patients need a dental restoration. They are often suggested when there has been trauma to the area. This may include an injury to the mouth or breakage that has affected the structure of a natural tooth. Once the dentist and patient have agreed on a dental restoration, then preparations are made. This sometimes requires the removal of part of the tooth enamel prior to taking impressions of the teeth. Once impressions are completed, they are sent to a dental laboratory. The dentist will also send information about the shape, size, and color of the existing teeth to ensure the restorations will blend in with the smile. Once the restorations are sent to the dental office, patients come back for a second appointment, during which the new restorations are bonded in place.
Who is a candidate for dental restorations such as bridges and dental crowns?
Not everyone will need crowns or bridges. In some situations, there may be more than one solution, so speaking with a dentist to decide what option is most appropriate for your specific needs is the first step in making an educated decision regarding your dental care. We encourage patients to consult with our team and undergo an evaluation to find out which solution is right for them.
